Founded by settlers in the mid-1800s, Geneva became the county seat and remained a rural community focused on agriculture and manufacturing businesses. Once the railroad connected Geneva to other cities in the region, wealthy Chicagoans realized the peaceful town was the perfect place for owning a second home or summer residence. Geneva’s welcoming ambiance continues to shine through today as a pleasant and diverse community that works hard to provide its residents with everything they could need or want.
The community spirit of Geneva comes out in full force during such special events as the Midsommar Swedish Days Festival, Geneva Arts Fair, the Festival of the Vine, Geneva Wedding Walk and 60 Men Who Cook, which is a charity event sponsored by the Geneva Chamber of Commerce. Geneva also has a variety of arts and music events including the First Friday Gallery Walk, Granquist Memorial Music Competition, The Fox Valley Folk Music & Storytelling Festival and more. For those residents who enjoy the outdoors, the city also has an extensive parks district to encourage hiking, biking, camping, skating and picnicking. The parks district also sponsors a variety of adult and youth programs – from intramural sports teams to dance classes. In addition, Geneva is home to the Kane County Cougars, a minor league baseball team affiliated with the Oakland Athletics. The Cougars feature a modern, comfortable stadium and offer entertainment for all age groups.
Geneva is, also, well known for the Third Street shopping district. Merchants display a wide variety of fares including antiques, furniture, household goods and trendy fashions from its’ many upscale boutiques. Numerous restaurants and cafes serve the area offering everything from a light breakfast to a casual lunch or a formal dinner at one of their fine dining venues.
Before children enjoy the many extracurricular activities, they attend the Geneva School District, where students consistently meet or exceed the state’s average standardized test scores. During the past school year, students were recognized for their hard work, with one student becoming a National Merit Scholarship Finalist and more than 100 pupils earning honors as Illinois State Scholars. For commuters, Geneva is served by a variety of rail and bus lines to get residents to work easier with less time on the road. For more information on Geneva real estate, contact The McKay Group.
